How I Balance Yoga, Pilates & Motherhood

Before becoming a mom, movement was a part of who I was. Some days I'd unroll my yoga mat, other days I'd do Pilates, and sometimes I'd head out for a long walk. It wasn't something I had to think about or plan around. It was just part of my routine.

Then my son was born, and like every new mom, my world changed overnight.

For a while, every ounce of my energy went toward taking care of him. As it should have. Newborns need you for everything, and I was completely happy to give him everything I had. But somewhere along the way, I stopped doing the little things that made me feel like... me.

It wasn't because I didn't want to. I just couldn't seem to find the time, and when I did have the time, I couldn't turn off my mom brain long enough to enjoy it.

I'd think about doing yoga while my son napped, but instead I'd start folding laundry or washing bottles. I'd tell myself I'd squeeze in a Pilates workout later, but then something else would come up. Before I knew it, another day had gone by without doing anything for myself.

I think a lot of moms experience this. We become so focused on caring for everyone else that we slowly stop checking in with ourselves.

For a while, I also had this mindset that if I couldn't fit in a full workout, there wasn't much point in trying. Looking back, I wish I hadn't put that pressure on myself.

Now I've learned that movement doesn't have to be perfect to be meaningful.

Some days I have enough time for a full Pilates workout. Other days I spend fifteen minutes stretching on my yoga mat before my son wakes up. Sometimes the only movement I get is taking him for a stroller walk around the neighborhood while listening to an audiobook.

And honestly, that's enough.

I've stopped looking at exercise as something I have to accomplish and started seeing it as a way to reconnect with myself. Yoga helps quiet my mind when it feels like I have a hundred tabs open. Pilates reminds me how strong my body really is not because of how it looks, but because of everything it's done over the past year.

This body grew my son.

It carried him for 8 1/2 months.

It brought him into the world.

It rocks him to sleep, chases after him now that he's constantly on the move, and somehow still finds the energy to show up every day.

I've learned to appreciate it so much more than I ever did before becoming a mom.

One of my favorite things now is that my son sometimes joins me, even if he doesn't realize it. He'll crawl over to my yoga mat, steal my resistance band, or sit beside me while I stretch. My workout doesn't always go according to plan, but I've stopped expecting it to.

This season of life isn't about perfect routines.

It's about finding little moments where I can take care of myself, even if they look different than they used to.

I've noticed something else, too. When I make time for myself, even if it's only twenty minutes, I show up differently for my family. I'm more patient, more present, and I simply feel better. It isn't because yoga or Pilates magically solve everything. It's because taking care of myself reminds me that I'm still a person outside of being a mom.

I'm just one year into motherhood now, and I'm finally starting to feel like I'm finding my rhythm. Not my old rhythm, because that version of my life is gone. This one is different, and in so many ways, it's better.

I'm learning how to blend the things I loved before becoming a mom with the life I have now. Maybe that looks like a quick Pilates workout during nap time. Maybe it's yoga after bedtime. Maybe it's an evening stroller walk while listening to a romance audiobook.

Whatever it is, I'm making room for me again.

And I've realized that's not selfish.

It's healthy.

Because the best version of myself isn't the one who gives every single piece of herself away. It's the one who remembers that caring for myself is part of caring for my family too.

If you're in a season where you're struggling to find time for yourself, I hope you know you don't have to get it perfect. Start small. Five minutes of stretching. A short walk. One yoga class. One Pilates workout.

Those little moments add up.

And slowly, you'll start finding pieces of yourself again.
