The Deal | Off Campus

I know I'm a little late to the party on this one, but now I completely understand why The Deal has had such a chokehold on the romance community for so long.

This book was SO MUCH FUN.

It has the kind of witty banter that makes you smile at your Kindle, Book, whatever you're reading on. The chemistry that jumps off the page, and enough spice to keep things interesting without completely overshadowing the story. Garrett Graham is exactly the kind of character I always tell myself I won't fall for. He's the cocky hockey star who seems like the definition of a player but somehow he ends up being one of those characters you can't help loving.

I also loved the pairing. A wildly popular college hockey player and a theater major shouldn't work as well as they do but it does! Their personalities balance each other perfectly, and watching their friendship slowly become something more was easily one of my favorite parts of the book.

What surprised me most, though, was the emotional depth.

Without giving anything away, both Garrett and Hannah are dealing with things that really broke my heart. Those moments never felt like they were added just for drama but they shaped who these characters were. More importantly, they had each other to lean on through some incredibly difficult situations, and I think that's what made their relationship feel so believable.

I ended up giving The Deal ★★★★☆.

The only reason it wasn't a full five stars for me was because the main conflict toward the end felt a little predictable. It's a storyline I've seen quite a few times in romance, and it's never been one of my favorite tropes. That said, I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't spiral into pages and pages of unnecessary miscommunication. If you're anything like me, you'll appreciate that.

I also finally watched the first season of the Off Campus adaptation after finishing the book, and I honestly thought they did a great job. Even though there are definitely differences but that's true of almost every adaptation. Some things that work beautifully on the page just don't translate the same way to television, and I actually felt like they captured the heart of Garrett and Hannah's story really well.

One thing this book made me realize is that college romances hit differently depending on where you are in life.

I'm long past the all-nighters, parties, terrible dining hall food, and cramming for exams. I'm married now, and I'm chasing around my one-year-old instead of rushing across campus.

But books like this still make me nostalgic.

Not because I wish I could go back, but because they remind me of what it felt like to be young, carefree, and completely consumed by the excitement of falling for someone. That stage of life is gone and I'm genuinely happy where I am now but there's something comforting about stepping back into it for a few hundred pages.

Maybe that's part of why The Deal has remained so popular all these years. Whether you're living the college experience now or left it behind years ago, there's still something about Garrett and Hannah's story that makes you remember those butterflies.

And I can't wait to continue the series.
